Boreham, Essex born all-rounder Ray Smith made his County debut for Essex in 1934 and enjoyed a lengthy career in County cricket despite losing seven seasons to the Second World War, playing 445 first class matches through to 1956. A right-hand batsman and right-arm medium pace and offbreak bowler, he scored 8 centuries and 51 half centuries with a highest score of 147, averaging 20.27 from an aggregate of 12,041 runs scored. As a bowler he took 1,350 wickets at 30.56 apiece, with a best return of 8-63, taking ten or more wickets in a match ten times, and recording five wickets or more in an innings on 73 occasions. During the War he regularly captained the British Empire side, scoring 2,155 runs and taking 308 wickets in wartime cricket. After the War, Ray Smith one of was Essex’s principal bowlers and wicket-takers, along with his cousin, Peter Smith.
