Description

Fort Beaufort, Cape Colony born William Solomon made one Test appearance for South Africa against Lord Hawke’s England side at Johannesburg in February 1899, scoring 2 and 2. His selection came about as a result of two gutsy innings – 64 for a Johannesburg XV and then 52 for Transvaal, his highest first class score, against the English tourists (playing as Marylebone Cricket Club). His first class career spanned 13 years but totalled five matches – two in 1892-93, two in 1898-99, and a final outing for Eastern Province in 1905-06, In one of his provincial matches he took his only first class wicket, returning 1-6, the only time he bowled in any of those games. He also took 5 catches including pouching Albert Trott in the second innings of the Test match.
