Description

Pretoria, Transvaal born right-arm fast-medium bowler Doug Meintjes played first class cricket for Transvaal from 1910 and played two Tests for South Africa against England on their 1922-23 tour, being selected as a fast-medium bowler who could bat. He made his Test debut at Johannesburg in February 1923, taking 3-38 in England’s second innings as the match was drawn, and retained his place for the Durban Test later the same month. Meintjes took six wickets at 19.16 apiece across both matches and was picked for the South African tour of England in 1924 but was never close to the Test team.

He played his final match for Transvaal in 1926. In 52 first class matches he scored 1,146 runs at an average of 16.14, with a best score of 87, one of two half centuries he made. With his bowling he took 91 wickets at 29.64 apiece with a best return of 8-63, his only haul of five or more wickets, in a match in which he also took ten or more wickets.

He later became secretary to the Wanderers Cricket Club and was the South African tour manager in 1948-49.
