Description

Bank Hall, St Michael, Barbados born all-rounder Ernest “Foffie” Williams was a right-handed batsman and right-arm fast-medium bowler who made his debut for Barbados in first class cricket in 1934-35 and played in four Tests in 1939 and 1948, making his debut for The West Indies on their 1939 tour to England at Old Trafford that July, his only Test match on the tour, when his batting average of 30.83 placed him second (by some distance) to the great George Headley, Williams making 370 runs on the tour, with 126 not out against Oxford University on May 24th. His career was then interrupted by the Second World War and he wasn’t recalled until England’s 1948 tour to the West Indies, when he played in the Bridgetown, Port of Spain and Georgetown Tests.

In the second innings of the First Test at Bridgetown in 1948, Williams hit his first six balls to the boundary: 6, 6, 4, 4, 4, 4, the first four balls off Jim Laker and the next two off Jack Ikin. He reached 50 in half an hour and finished with 72 in 63 minutes, his highest Test score. He also took 9 wickets in Test matches with his bowling with a best return of 3-51 in the Bridgetown Test, including bowling Joe Hardstaff Jr for 98, also taking 3-64 in the second innings at Port of Spain.

His highest first class score was 131 not out for Barbados against Trinidad in 1935-36, when he and Manny Martindale shared an eighth-wicket partnership of 255, which remains a West Indian first class record; he also took three wickets in each innings, opening the bowling.

In 42 first class matches he scored 1,479 runs with 2 centuries and 6 half centuries and a highest score of 131 not out. With his bowling he took 116 wickets at 29.19 apiece, with a best return of 5-73, his only five wicket haul, also holding 18 catches in first class play.

Williams also represented Barbados at football, and served for a time as Chief Sports Officer in his island’s government.
