Description

Townsville, Queensland born right-arm fast-medium bowler Hugh “Pud” Thurlow made his debut in State cricket in the 1928-29 season and came to prominence by taking 6-60 for Queensland against Victoria in December 1929. In the course of doing this he broke Bill Woodfull’s finger and put him out of action for the rest of the season. Thurlow was called up for the Fourth Test against South Africa in Adelaide in January 1932, which Australia won, but never played for his country again. He opened the bowling twice and finished with 0-86 for the match, perhaps no disgrace considering Clarrie Grimmett and Bill O’Reilly on debut shared 18 wickets on a spin-friendly deck. Thurlow batted once and was run out for a duck, Don Bradman was the man stranded at the far end … not out 299.

Thurlow continued in State cricket for several seasons, his last being 1934-35, by when he had played 31 first class matches, achieving little with the bat with a highest score of 23, and with his bowling he took 80 wickets at 42.88 apiece with a best performance of 6-59, one of five occasions in which he took five wickets in an innings.
