Description

Henfield, Sussex born right-handed batsman Charles Smith was an amateur cricketer who first played for Sussex while still a teenager in 1898. He played 220 first class matches through to 1911, and was Sussex’s County captain in both 1906 and 1909. With his batting he scored 5,844 runs at an average of 19.54, scoring two centuries, with a highest score of 103 not out. An occasional right-arm medium-fast pace bowler, he took 9 wickets in first class play but never more than one in an innings. He also took 149 catches in first class play, quite a high ratio to total matches played.

His father Charles Hamlin Smith also played for Sussex as did his uncle, Arthur Smith. His great uncle Alfred Smith played for Sussex from 1841 to 1852.
