Langley Mill, Derbyshire born Herbert Slater played 5 matches for Derbyshire in the 1907 season as a right arm medium pace and off break bowler, and a right hand batsman, without great success in any of his matches. With the ball he took 2 first class wickets at 19 apiece with a best return of 2-15. In 9 innings his highest score was 21 and his average 5.57.

His father Henry Slater played for Derbyshire between 1882 and 1887, and his brother Archibald Slater appeared for Derbyshire from 1911 to 1931.
