Description

Ratby, Leicestershire born all-rounder Alan Shipman was a right-handed batsman and a right-arm fast bowler with a high delivery who made his debut for Leicestershire in 1920. After being primarily regarded as a bowler in his early career, his batting improved substantially and in 1926 he made 1,307 runs, with 1,325 the following season, which included his career highest score, 226 against Kent at Tunbridge Wells. “He bats patiently, but does not flatter bowlers by showing undue caution, and is excellent for opening an innings, using his height in playing forward and driving well” it was said of him at the time.

His career with Leicestershire ended in 1936, Shipman having played in 386 first class matches. In those he recorded an aggregate of 13,682 runs at an average of 23.22 with 15 centuries and 65 half centuries. As a bowler he took 607 wickets at 25.36 apiece with a best return of 7-63 among 16 five wicket hauls. He also held 97 catches in first class play.
