Newlands, Cape Town born all-rounder Norman Reid was educated at Oxford University where he was a Rugby Blue in 1912 and 1913 before his service in the First World War, when he was awarded the DSO and MC. He made his debut in first class cricket for Western Province in 1920-21 and on top of being a useful all rounder, batting right-handed and bowling right-arm, he had a reputation as a brilliant fielder, usually at cover point.

His most notable performance in first class cricket was an innings of 81 not out for Western Province against Orange Free State in 1921-22, and in 13 first class matches he averaged 21.94 with the bat. On the back of this performance he was picked for South Africa to play Australia at Cape Town in November 1921, when he made 11 and 6 in his two innings, and took 2-63 in Australia’s first innings, dismissing Edgar Mayne and Nip Pellew as South Africa suffered a 10 wicket defeat.

He played his last match for Western Province in 1923, by when his bowling had yielded 20 wickets in first class play at 23.15 apiece with a best return of 4-52.

Two of Norman Reid’s elder brothers played first class cricket for Western Province, Allan Reid in the late 1890’s and early 1900’s, and Frank Reid either side of the First World War.
