Description

Streatham Common, London born right-hand batsman Kingsmill (most often known as K.J.) Key enjoyed a long cricket career spanning from 1882 to 1909, during the course of which he played for, among others, Surrey County Cricket Club, whom he captained for several years in the 1890’s having succeeded John Shuter in 1894, before Digby Jephson took over the captaincy in 1900, Oxford University, Marylebone Cricket Club (M.C.C.) and The Gentlemen.

His highest score of 281, for Oxford against Middlesex at Chiswick Park in 1887, remains as of 2012 the highest first class score made for the University. In 368 first class matches he scored 13,008 runs at an average of 26.22, with 13 centuries and 60 half centuries. Bowling occasional right-arm offbreaks, he took 12 first class wickets at 28.08 apiece with a best return of 2-32. He also held 113 catches in first class play.
