Description

Kangaroo Point, Brisbane, Queensland born Alec Hurwood was a right arm medium pace or off-break bowler renowned for his odd bowling style, taking only a couple of steps before delivering the ball, who made his debut for Queensland in the 1925-26 season. Hurwood was called up to the Australian squad for summer tour to England of 1930-31 but didn’t feature in the Test matches, and made his Test match debut against The West Indies at Adelaide in December 1930 when he took 3-55 and 4-86, also playing in the match at Sydney the next month, when he took his Test best figures of 4-22 in their second innings.

Hurwood was unlucky, after gaining very respectable figures from his two Test appearances, to be dropped in favour of bowlers returning to the squad from injury, and he continued in State cricket until 1931-32, by when he had featured in 43 first class games. As a batsman his top score of 89 was one of three fifties he made, averaging 11.27. His bowling claimed 113 wickets at 27.62 apiece, with a best performance of 6-80, and he took five wickets in an innings on 5 occasions with a single ten wicket match. He also took 29 catches in first class play.
