Description

The son of legendary former Lancashire and England cricket captain Albert “Monkey” Hornby, Church Minshull, Cheshire born Albert Hornby was educated at Harrow School and went up to Trinity College, Cambridge University in 1896. He appeared in 292 first class matches as a right-handed batsman and an occasional wicketkeeper. He assisted Lancashire to win the 1904 County Championship under Archie MacLaren and succeeded him as the Lancashire County captain from 1908 until 1914, until his cricket career was ended by the First World War.

He scored 9,784 runs at an average of 24.58, scoring 8 centuries with a highest score of 129, and held 217 catches, making one stumping.

During the First World War he served in the Army Remount Service with the rank of Captain.
