Description

Westminster, London born Herbert Chaplin was educated at Harrow and played first class cricket from 1904 to 1914 playing for Sussex, and was County captain from 1910 to 1914. He also played for The Europeans in India. He appeared in 176 first class matches as a right-handed batsman who occasionally bowled right arm medium pace. He scored 6,497 runs at an average of 24.42 with a highest score of 213 not out among seven career centuries and 29 half centuries. With his bowling he took 8 wickets at with an average of 47.25, with a best performance of 3-47. He also took 35 catches in first class play. His cricket career was effectively ended by the First World War, during which he served as a Second Lieutenant in the 10th Hussars.
