Description

Annesley, Nottinghamshire born Wilf Carter played first class cricket for Derbyshire, first appearing for the county in 1920. Carter scored his first half-century in the 1921 season. In 1922 he achieved his record first class score of 145 against Leicestershire when he and Anthony Jackson made an eighth-wicket partnership of 182, a record for the County which lasted until 1996. He also headed the Derbyshire batting averages in 1922. In 1923 he made 100 not out against Northamptonshire. He left the Derbyshire staff after the 1924 season. However he returned to play four matches for Derbyshire in 1926.

Carter was a right-handed batsman and played 112 innings in 65 first class matches, scoring 1,812 runs with an average of 17.76 and a top score of 145, two centuries and six half-centuries. He was a right-arm bowler of slow donkey-drops and took 16 first class wickets for an average of 44.18 and a best performance of 3 for 12. He also took 26 catches in first class cricket.

He was also an accomplished footballer. A left half, Carter began his football career with Bolsover Colliery after the First World War, and joined newly elected Third Division (South) club Watford in June 1920 making his Football League debut against Southend United that September. He scored 4 goals in 131 games for Watford over the next six seasons but lost his place in 1925, playing his final match that November. He retired from professional football in the summer of 1926.

Upon his retirement from cricket, Carter worked as a coach and scout for Watford.
