Description

Eastwood, Nottinghamshire born Robert Burrows was a right-arm fast bowler and right-handed batsman who played for Worcestershire between 1899 and 1919 and batted well enough to warrant the description of an all-round cricketer. He took 96 wickets in 1901 and twice took exactly 100 wickets – in 1910, at 23.46 a piece and in 1913 at 21.41, leading his county’s attack for some years.

Burrows scored 112 against Gloucestershire County Cricket Club at Worcester in 1907 and averaged 25.28, but his bowling return fell to 57 wickets at 24 runs apiece, as Arnold and Cuffe came to the fore. He set a world record in 1911 when he sent a bail spinning 67 yards and 6 inches when he bowled William Huddleston at Old Trafford. He recorded his second first class century, 107 not out again against Gloucestershire at Worcester in July 1914, when he batted number ten. After the First World War he returned to play for the County and retired after the 1919 season.

In all 277 first class matches he played, he scored 5,223 runs at an average of 14.07, with 9 half centuries in addition to his two hundreds. As a bowler he took 894 wickets at 26.40 apiece, with a best of 8-48, with 57 five wicket innings and 9 ten wicket matches. He held 138 catches, mostly at point.

In 1923 he joined the first-class umpire’s list and served for nine seasons. His sole Test match as an umpire came in the England v Australia match at Trent Bridge from 12th to 15th June 1926.
