Description

South Yarra, Victoria born William Bruce was a gifted left-handed batsman. He represented Victoria in State cricket “at an early age” and was their captain, and played in 14 Test matches for Australia between 1885, when he made his debut against England at Melbourne in January that year, and 1895, and was the first Australian left-hander to tour England. Although he never made a century in his 14 Tests, he had a batting average, high for the era, of 29.25, with a highest Test score of 80 at Adelaide in January 1895. Of his style, it was said of him at the time “For grace and elegance of style it would be difficult to name a batsman the superior of William Bruce”, and that in Australia “for some years he has been quite one of the first batsmen”. He played his grade cricket for Melbourne.

In his Test match career he scored 5 half centuries, with a total of 702 runs. He also bowled left-arm medium pace, and took 12 Test wickets at 36.66 a piece, with best figures of 3-88. Seven of his Test dismissals were clean bowled.

In a 145 match first class career, Bruce made 4 centuries with a highest score of 191, and also made 28 fifties, scoring 5,731 runs at an average of 23.97. He took 143 wickets at an average of 29.67, with a best performance of 7-72, and took five wickets in an innings five times. He also pouched 102 catches.
