Description

Westminster, London born Hon. David Brand, later 5th Viscount Hampden, was educated at Eton College, where he captained the First XI in 1921. In 1919 he had headed the school’s batting averages, making 177 runs at an average of 29.50, in 1920 he was second in both the school’s batting and bowling averages with a 28.08 batting average and 26 wickets at 15.34 apiece with a highest score of 116, and he played in the annual match against Harrow in 1919, 1920 and 1921.

He went up to Trinity College, Cambridge, but played only one first class match for the university team against The Army in May 1922. He spent the 1922-23 university year on a tour of Ceylon, Australia and New Zealand with the Marylebone Cricket Club under A.C. MacLaren’s captaincy. His highest first class score was 60 in the second match against New South Wales, and his best bowling figures were 4-31 in the first match against Auckland. He played no further first class cricket after the tour.

In 14 first class matches, Brand averaged 15.37 with the bat with the single half century, and took 27 wickets with his right-arm medium pace bowling at 28.03 apiece with a best performance of 4-31.

His uncles, The Earl of Dalkeith and Lord George Scott both played first class cricket, the former for The M.C.C. in 1885 and the latter for Oxford University and Middlesex between 1886 and 1905.
