Description

Longford, Tasmania born all-rounder Colin Newton first played for Tasmania in 1911-12 as a left-handed batsman and a slow left-arm orthodox or left-arm fast-medium bowler. In 27 first class matches through to the 1933-34 season he scored 1,117 runs, 117 of those coming with his only century, and he also scored half centuries on five other occasions, averaging 25.38 with the bat. His bowling contributed 56 wickets at 39.55 apiece with a best return of 4-36. He played his club cricket for East Hobart for 26 seasons and also played for Sandy Bay. In club cricket his most prolific individual season with both the bat and ball came in 1915-16 taking 70 wickets @ 12.37 and scoring 574 runs at an average of 57.40 for South Hobart.
